British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
