Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
